Treat, executive director of the National Legislative Association on Prescription Drugs, discussed her group's efforts to bring down drug prices.

The association brings together state legislators from across the United States to work on issues related to drug prices, from compiling information to advocating for laws and regulations that could lower costs.

"Our state legislators aren't waiting for Congress," she said.

Many of the approaches favored by the group end up facing legal challenges filed by drug manufacturers, but Treat said that, "If it doesn't end up in court, it doesn't do anything."

The group supports the legal importation of prescription drugs from Canada and other countries in which prices controls keep the costs down, Treat said, "as a way to get towards price negotiations and controls ultimately."
